Environmental Stewardship Policy

Commitment

The Athenaeum is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its operations and to ensuring that environmental considerations are integrated into collections management, building operations, travel, and partner relationships.

Travel and freight

Staff are expected to minimise unnecessary travel. Object transport is consolidated where possible. Courier routes are planned for environmental efficiency alongside object safety. Cross-frame transit, where it occurs, is excluded from standard carbon accounting pending agreed methodology.

Storage and energy

Storage environments are maintained at the minimum conditions required for object safety. Climate control settings are reviewed annually against current conservation standards and adjusted where reduction is achievable without risk.

Energy consumed in maintaining frame-stability conditions at Sites 03 and 04 is logged separately and is not attributed to the institution's standard energy footprint, as it does not arise from the consumption of resources within the GR-54196-D-8 energy economy.

Review

Environmental performance is reviewed annually by the Operations team. A summary is included in the Annual Report. Targets are updated following each review.
