If not alien teachers, what made writing start?

Accounting is the boring answer and should not be despised. Tokens, envelopes, tallies, commodities, labour, obligation. Writing begins partly because somebody has to remember who owes what after the room empties. Civilisation is built from memory problems as much as from visions.

And then the boring answer becomes sacred because memory, obligation and temple are already braided. The ledger is not merely economic; it is a moral technology. That is where the ancient world keeps defeating modern categories.

Ledger as moral technology is a better documentary than the documentaries.

What about genetic engineering? Atrahasis has humans made from clay and god blood. That is weirdly biological.

It is embodied, yes. Clay, blood, breath, spit, divine substance, womb imagery -- many creation traditions use materials that join earth, life and divinity. Calling that "genetic engineering" because bodies are involved is a category jump. The myth is explaining why humans are clay and god, labourer and mortal, noisy and sacred.
