I am doing this in three posts because every Anunnaki thread collapses into Sitchin within five replies and I would like, once, to lay the actual ground first. My handle is a joke ABOUT this, before anyone starts -- I love this material enough to refuse to let it be turned into television. Post 1: what the word is. Post 2: what Sitchin actually did to the texts. Post 3: what is genuinely strange and worth keeping. Read all three. I am a believer in the wonder of these people and a hardliner about their evidence, and those are not in tension, they are the same love.

POST 1 -- THE WORD. "Anunnaki" is Sumerian, broadly "the offspring of Anu" (Anu = the sky-god, the prefix a-nun-na). In the actual literature they are the great gods of the pantheon, the divine assembly -- sometimes contrasted with the Igigi, the gods who do the labour, and in Atrahasis it is the Igigi who go on strike and humans get made from clay and a slain god's blood to take over the work. That is a profound, strange, beautiful myth about labour and mortality. It is not a personnel file. Nowhere in Sumerian or Akkadian does "Anunnaki" mean "astronauts," "those who from heaven came" as a literal craft-arrival, or a named home planet. Those are later glosses laid ON the word, not found IN it. Hold that distinction; everything downstream depends on it.

POST 2 -- WHAT SITCHIN DID. Zecharia Sitchin took real texts and a real, hard, contested field (Sumerology is genuinely difficult, the signs are polyvalent, honest scholars disagree) and resolved every ambiguity in one direction: toward spacemen and a hidden planet, "Nibiru," on a 3,600-year orbit, whose inhabitants engineered us to mine gold. The problems are not matters of opinion. Nibiru in the actual texts is associated with a crossing-point and, most plausibly, with Jupiter or Marduk's star -- it is not a hidden trans-Plutonian world. The "12th planet" count only works if you make the sun and moon planets, which is a choice he does not flag. The gold-mining-of-humans narrative is stitched from pieces of different myths from different centuries as if they were one document. I am not calling Sitchin a fraud; I think he fell in love with a hypothesis and then could not hear the word "no." But the translations underneath the TV empire do not say what the empire says they say, and you can check that against any standard sign-list, which is more than the empire ever invites you to do.

POST 3 -- WHAT IS ACTUALLY STRANGE, AND WORTH KEEPING. Because I do not want anyone leaving this thread thinking the answer is "it is all nothing, go home." The genuinely arresting things, the ones I would defend at any table: the Sumerian King List, with its antediluvian reigns of tens of thousands of years, then a flood, then suddenly human-scale reigns -- a culture encoding a memory of a break in time. The sheer, abrupt sophistication of the place: writing, the wheel, base-60, law, astronomy, arriving in southern Iraq seemingly all at once. The Apkallu, the seven sages who bring civilisation from the waters before the flood -- a culture-hero motif that recurs across the whole region. NONE of that needs a spaceship and ALL of it is more interesting than one. Keep the awe. Spend it on the real artefacts. Reserved posts done -- now bring me a tablet, not a documentary.

But Sitchin gives actual translations in the books. Are you saying every quoted line is made up?

No. That is the trap. The quotes often start from real passages, then the hinge word gets forced, the century gets blurred, and separate traditions get sewn together as if one priest wrote one memo. A bad method can use real bricks. That is why it is harder to answer than pure fiction.

This is the useful version of a believer thread: the awe stays on the table and the bad translation gets removed from it. I am bookmarking the phrase "ordinary tablet" for future crimes.

New here, so apologies if this is basic. I read The Twelfth Planet when I was sixteen and it was the first book that made the ancient world feel alive. I get that translations can be wrong, but why would the King List reigns be so huge unless something not normal was being remembered?
