What should a monolingual beginner read first without making you all do my homework? I can use Babelfish badly. I would rather start with the good boring stuff than the television version.

Not rude. Start with Hessdalen for method, Belgian wave for witness/radar complexity, then one GEPAN case where the paperwork is available in translation. Do not start with Amicizia. That one is culturally dense and the English summaries will eat your shoes.

And a small rule for monolingual readers: when a translated summary sounds too clean, suspect the summary before the case. Real documents have awkward edges. Good translation preserves some of the awkwardness.

Finnish angle, if wanted. We have lake-light stories and old rural material that never travels because Finns assume nobody wants the slow version. Also we have a bad habit of calling every northern thing "like Hessdalen" because Norway got the instruments and the name. It is not fair to Lars and not fair to the local reports.

I can gather a short list in English, but it will be very short and probably boring. This thread has made boring feel like a feature, so perhaps that is all right.

Please do gather it. And yes, not every northern light is Hessdalen. That label is becoming too convenient. The virtue of Hessdalen is not the light, it is that people stayed with one place long enough to build a record. Other places deserve their own names and their own instruments if the reports justify it.

A regional desk can prevent a different kind of mistranslation: turning every local phenomenon into the famous one nearby.

Hola. In Catalonia people talk about lights near Montserrat. Some is tourism and monks and stories for visitors, yes. But there are also reports from drivers and walkers before the tourist brochures. Spanish UFO groups have clippings. I do not know if this board wants them.

I can translate Spanish to English, Catalan a little. Please do not make it only "mystic mountain" because then the serious parts disappear.

For the Montserrat poster: yes, clippings are useful, and the tourist layer is not automatically contamination if it can be dated. Put the pre-tourist reports in one pile, the brochure-era reports in another, and the modern retellings in a third. The change between piles may be the evidence.

Regional folklore does not ruin a case. It tells you what language the case will borrow when it gets frightened.
