Has never been seen. Commissions work via warm paper passed through the seam at the top of the drawer.
1. THE CLIENT
The Client occupies the seventh drawer of the filing cabinet — a drawer in a four-drawer cabinet, which has seven. The drawer has never been opened. The Client commissions work by sliding briefs out through the seam at the top of the drawer, on paper that is warm to the touch and remains warm, in a hand that no one in the building recognises and that a handwriting analyst declined to assess after noting that "the pressure suggests it was written from the other side of the paper."
2. THE BRIEF
The brief is present. The brief is legible. The brief cannot be retained. Every attempt to summarise, photograph, photocopy, or recall the brief results in the relevant text becoming, on review, the following sentence, regardless of what was originally read:
"You will know what to build when it is time to build it, and you will not need this drawer opened to do it, and you will be glad, on balance, that it stayed shut."
Three staff have read the full brief. All three independently began the same piece of work the following Monday without discussing it. The work is in progress. None of them can say what it is for. All of them describe it as "the most important thing I've ever made" and "completely unremarkable" in the same sentence.
3. CONSIDERATION
The Client pays in warmth. Since the engagement began, the seventh drawer has been 0.4–1.1°C warmer than its neighbours, and on the evenings when work is delivered, the entire server room is, briefly, the temperature of a held hand. Facilities have logged this as "a heating fault we are choosing to keep." No one has been cold at SW8 since the contract began. Several staff report sleeping better. One reports dreaming, fondly, of "a drawer that loves its job."
4. WHY THIS CONTRACT IS UNREPORTABLE
The deliverable cannot be described because the brief edits the description. The Client cannot be named because the drawer is shut and is to remain shut — this is the single point on which the otherwise non-committal Board has acted, by recording the matter, leaving three blank pages, and moving on. The contract is filed here in the only form that survives contact with it: the knowledge that it exists, that it is warm, that it is patient, and that it is not yet due.
