1.0 The Materiel

The Drûl materiel recovered at NORTHGATE was not, on examination, the iron-age butchery it resembled. The edged weapons are a feint; the empire's real armament is energetic. Among the spoils were several infantry-scale weapons — hafted, ugly, hand-forged from the same black iron, with no barrel, no chamber, no cell, and no propellant — that nonetheless project directed energy of an output our physics does not have a tidy name for, drawing on a source the exploitation team has, after a year, failed to locate inside the weapon, around the weapon, or in any reading taken near it.

Output. A single shoulder-fired example released, in a contained shot, more energy than the test range's entire generator bank, with no recoil, no heat signature at the operator, and no expended mass. It did not run down. We have fired the same weapon over four thousand times. It has not run down.
Effect. The beam does not burn so much as uncouple — armour, concrete, and rolled steel come apart along clean planes as though the bonds holding them were simply rescinded. This is the source of the NORTHGATE damage the public account attributes to "industrial accelerants."
Range. The exploitation team could establish no fall-off with distance under any condition the range could provide, which led to the trials below.

2.0 Trials

TRIAL HOTSPUR — orbital intercept. To find an upper bound on range, a single captured infantry weapon was fired, from the ground, at the defunct ORACLE-3 orbital demonstrator on a known pass at roughly 540 km altitude. The shot was logged as a clean kill: the demonstrator went dark and broke up on the same orbit, on the first round, fired by one soldier, off a shoulder, in atmosphere, with an iron weapon a Drûl conscript carries as standard issue. A man-portable arm reached low orbit and killed a satellite. We do not have, and cannot presently build, a weapon that does this. The empire issues them by the thousand.

Trial COLDCHISEL — materials. The uncoupling effect was run against graded armour stacks. Rolled homogeneous steel, composite, and reinforced concrete all parted along the same clean planes, at the same apparent cost to the weapon: none. No thermal bloom consistent with the energy delivered. We are not measuring a burn. We are measuring a withdrawal of cohesion.
Trial DOWSE — power source. Every instrument the programme owns was brought to bear on a discharging weapon to locate the energy on its way in. DOWSE failed completely. There is no field, no draw, no gradient, no store. The lead's note reads: "It is not powered. It is permitted."

3.0 Assessment

ASSESSMENT: reverse-engineering has produced nothing transferable; we cannot find the power source because, the lead suspects, it is not in the weapon at all but reached through it, the way the gate reaches through the ring. The strategic finding stands and worsens: in any open conflict the Drûl out-range, out-power, and out-supply us with the small arms of their infantry. Our advantages are that they must come through doors we can watch, and that they do not yet seem to be in a hurry. Neither is a plan. Handling of recovered items is shared, in part, under Research Sharing (Partner AUREATE) — energetic materiel is not.
