Publishing Paths

A writer can choose several routes to publication. Each path has different costs, rights, and benefits.

Traditional publishing

Traditional publishers buy the rights to your work, provide editing and production, and pay an advance and royalties. They also handle printing, distribution, and bookstore placement. This is the most common route for authors seeking a wide audience and professional support.

Vanity publishing

Vanity publishers ask the author to pay for printing and production. They may offer a finished book, but distribution and editorial support are usually limited. Vanity publishing can make sense for private editions or special projects, but it is generally not the best choice if your goal is conventional publication.

Hybrid publishing

Hybrid publishers share costs with the author. In return, the author may receive a higher share of royalties or retain more rights. If you consider this route, be sure the contract clearly states who owns the rights, who pays for distribution, and how returns are calculated.

Electronic publishing

Electronic publishing offers writers direct control through online presentation and distribution, with no upfront costs required. It is particularly suited to sample chapters, author pages, and short works, and serves as a practical option for those who have not yet found a traditional publisher or who wish to avoid the expenses of vanity arrangements. Electronic Books provides support for online publishing as well as assistance with submissions through our agent desk.

Choosing the right path

Consider your goals. If your priority is editorial guidance and wide bookstore distribution, traditional publishing is usually best. If you want to keep control and publish with your own resources, electronic publishing is the lowest-cost option. Always read contracts carefully and do not sign away more rights than you need.
