Software for Writers

The software you use can make a difference when you are sending work to an editor, an agent, or an online reader. Here are the most useful tools in 1993.

WordPerfect 5.1 and 6.0

WordPerfect is the most widely accepted manuscript program among editors and publishers. It is stable, it preserves pagination, and it works well on both DOS and Windows machines. Use the standard manuscript template if your version includes one.

Keep your files simple: 12-point serif font, double spacing, one-inch margins, and standard paragraph indents. Avoid headers that use special features and do not embed graphics in the manuscript file unless a publisher specifically requests them.

Microsoft Word 6.0

Word for Windows is widely used in offices. Editors who use Windows will often request a .DOC file. If you use Word, use a common font such as Times New Roman or Courier, and save the file in Word 6 format when possible.

Word files can look different on different machines. Before you send a manuscript, print a copy and proofread it. If a publisher prefers hard copy, print the file and mail the pages, and mention the software used.

Plain text editor

If you do not have WordPerfect or Word, use a plain text editor such as Notepad, QEdit, or the editor built into your online service. Save the file as ASCII text. Use a clean layout with page breaks inserted by form feed characters or by starting each chapter on a new line with clearly marked headings.

A plain text file is the safest electronic submission for email. It will display on any machine and avoids problems with incompatible word processor formats.

HTML and the Web

If you are posting sample work on the Web, keep the HTML simple. Use <P>, <B>, <I>, and <A>. Do not rely on frames, embedded media, or advanced formatting. A clean text page is easiest for readers and for the early browsers in use today.

Disk and email delivery

For disk submission, use a 3.5-inch floppy formatted in MS-DOS and include both the manuscript file and a plain text version if possible. For email, attach the file in the requested format and keep the total size small. If you are unsure, ask the recipient before sending a large attachment.
