Email is a practical way to send queries and sample pages. Many editors still prefer postal submissions, but email makes it much easier to reach a response quickly.
Use a clear subject line, such as:
Query: THE SUMMER WINDOW, by Jane Smith
If you are sending sample pages, add a note such as Sample pages attached.
Keep the message brief. Introduce yourself, state the title, the length, and the type of work. Mention any relevant publication history or credentials. Offer to send the full manuscript or a printed copy if the editor prefers.
Attach the manuscript in the format requested. If you have not been asked for a specific format, attach a plain ASCII text file and offer to send a WordPerfect or Word file if needed. Do not attach files larger than a few hundred kilobytes without permission.
Name the file clearly, for example summer-window-jane-smith.txt. If you use WordPerfect, name it summer-window-jane-smith.wp5 or .wp6. If you are sending HTML for a Web sample, keep the file simple and use only basic tags.
Always follow the publisher’s submission guidelines. If a publisher requests hard copy only, do not send an unsolicited email attachment. If they accept email, send no more than the pages they ask for and keep the message polite and businesslike.
