Persons of Distinction
A few of the celebrated citizens of the rings, that the visitor may know whose work they admire — each with their own portrait and account.
The rings keep the likenesses and the deeds of their distinguished citizens in the Hall of Honour, and on appointed days the young of the wards are brought to learn them. A few of the living are commended here to the visitor; follow a name for the portrait and the account.
- Hekaton the Wright. The island's foremost engineer, master of the tide-engines, the elevators, the bridge-gear, and the frames of the airships. It is said of him that he may be argued out of no problem and into any workshop.
- Master Ouen. The Sage of the rings, whose Sayings order the civic life of Aurei and open every sitting of the Concord.
- Vaitia of the Marble. The foremost sculptor of the age, whose figures in the Grand Gallery are held to breathe.
- Captain Maro Teha. The test-pilot of the first Aegis-borne current and the captain whose later charts opened the southern ice road.
- Iole the Star-Wright. Astronomer and orrery-maker, keeper of the great water-orrery, who reads the bodies the rings hold dear and sets the festival calendar by them.
