Locking this one. Good thread. The honest summary: many witnesses, open naval documentation, but the photographer's own history keeps it from being airtight, and the negatives' handling after the fact is the vulnerable point. That's the case. Not solved. Not hoax. Not confirmed. Exactly what it looks like: one of the harder classic cases to dismiss, and one of the ones where dismissal still isn't clean either. File accordingly.
