Description

Draws a horizontal rule between sections.

Syntax

Attributes

Strict HTML 2.0: none. SIZE, WIDTH, ALIGN and NOSHADE were common later extensions.

Usage Guidelines

• Use HR to divide major page areas such as header, content and footer.
• Do not use repeated HR elements as decoration.
• Because strict HTML 2.0 has no CSS, HR is a simple separator that survives in text-mode browsing.
• Keep pages readable without depending on the exact rendered line.

Common Mistakes

• Presentational HR attributes are browser extensions, not clean HTML 2.0.

Authoring Note

Write the document first, then test it in a graphical browser and a text browser. The page should remain understandable if images fail, colours are ignored, or the browser uses its own fonts.
