THE REGISTRAR
Filed as a member of the Ministry of Grace. Holds the senior Athenaeum post for provenance. Knows where things came from, and what is not to be near what.
PERSONNEL / MINISTRY MEMBER / ATHENAEUM REGISTRAR / PARTIAL CLEARANCE
OVERVIEW
The member documented here is, in our records and on the Thursday roll, an ordinary congregant of the Ministry of Grace: punctual, unremarkable, good with a spreadsheet. They are also the Registrar of the Meridian Athenaeum, which makes them the person who decides, for a collection spanning continents, what each object is — where it came from, what may stand beside it, and which records about it are not to be written down. It is the most senior Ministry appointment at the Athenaeum and, by some distance, the quietest person in either organisation.
We deal with the Registrar because provenance is the one thing the Athenaeum will not delegate. When the object from Crossing 08 came back, it was the Registrar who arrived — overnight, with the vitrine, with a folder, and with a manner the project lead described as "a doctor who already has your results." The object file the Registrar opened that night, for the piece accessioned as the Colonnade Fragment, was already three-quarters written before anyone had told them what had been brought back.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establishes and guards the provenance of every object in the Athenaeum's catalogue, to the precise point at which provenance becomes something the institution prefers not to know — and stops there, deliberately, with the silence fully documented as a silence.
- Determines adjacency: which objects may be stored, displayed, or transported together. Maintains a list of pairings that are forbidden. Will not share the list, on the grounds that "the list is also a recipe."
- Signs movement of objects between Athenaeum sites and partner institutions, including SW8. Co-authored the handling protocol for objects of off-terrestrial origin, a document that exists, that we have used, and that we have never been given a complete copy of.
- Holds keys to Site Four in full and to two further sites in part. Holds, by the Athenaeum's compartmentation principle, keys to nothing else, and regards the keys they lack as none of their business.
WHAT THE REGISTRAR WILL NOT SAY
The Registrar is helpful within a boundary that is exact, consistent, and never explained. They will confirm that the Athenaeum has sites they have never visited. They will confirm there are catalogues they may not read and a wing, at a site they cannot name, they are not permitted to enter. They will confirm that the object from Crossing 08 has, in their words, "a twin, held elsewhere, appropriately." Asked where, the Registrar answers, every time, with the same sentence, in the same level tone: "That is held at the meridian proper, and I am not cleared, and I am glad of it."
