hey all. having one of those weeks where everything feels a bit off, you know? work is a mess, the weather is grey, and i just need something that feels like a warm blanket. what are your comfort movies? the ones you put on when you need to remember that things can just be nice. not heavy, not demanding. just something familiar that makes you feel a little less alone for a couple hours.
mine is pretty shameless -- i keep coming back to Steel Magnolias. there is something about it that just wraps around you, the way they all bicker and love each other at the same time. i have seen it maybe forty times and it still gets me.

oh man, i am all about the big loud adventure when i need a pick-me-up. give me Raiders of the Lost Ark and i will sit there grinning like an idiot for two hours straight. harrison ford makes everything feel like it is going to be okay. or if i want to really laugh i will throw on Ghostbusters -- i must have watched it a hundred times and i still crack up at the same stupid jokes.

there is nothing quite like a proper black-and-white classic when the world feels too loud. i always reach for the old ones -- Casablanca, or It's a Wonderful Life if i am feeling sentimental. they do not make them like that anymore, you know? there is something about the way they told stories back then. simpler, maybe, but they knew how to make you feel something real. no need for all the flash and bang. just good people and good stories.

give me an underdog story every time. Rocky, Hoosiers, even The Bad News Bears -- there is something about watching people who are down on their luck figure out a way to come through. they make you believe that maybe, if some ragtag group can pull it together, your bad week is not so bad after all. sports movies especially. there is something pure about them once you strip away the noise.

i go quiet and gentle when things are rough. something like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty -- just let the animation wash over you and think about castles and music. or a quiet one like Now, Voyager. something that does not ask too much but reminds you beauty and kindness still exist. it is the film equivalent of chamomile tea, if that makes sense. you just sink into it and let it hold you for a while.

here is the thing -- a great soundtrack can carry you through almost anything. that is why Singin' in the Rain gets me every time. pure joy on film. or Breakfast at Tiffany's if i want something wistful. sometimes when my week is falling apart i put on the music from one of those and just sit with it before i even put the movie in. let Henry Mancini or the old jazz standards do the heavy lifting.

i am a sucker for the british comfort watches -- something like Four Weddings and a Funeral, or a nice gentle period piece. there is something about the way the british do understated humor and feeling that just feels like home to me. you can sink into it and not worry about anything. the kind of thing you watch while it is raining outside and a cup of tea goes cold beside you. no stress, just nice.

you know what i lean on when times get tough? an old western, or something with Frank Capra's fingerprints on it. It's a Wonderful Life, or It Happened One Night. something where the good guys feel like good guys and there is a sense the world can be kind if you let it. aoife, i hope your week turns around soon. sometimes you just need to remind yourself what the good parts feel like, and there is no shame in that. wrap yourself in whatever makes you feel okay, and come out the other side. take care of yourself.
