The Vellum of Quiet Hours
An illuminated book of hours legible only while the room is silent.
- Description
- An illuminated horarium — a book of hours kept by an order devoted to silent observance. Text and illumination are legible only while the room is silent; sound returns the characters to rest in the margins until quiet is restored. This appears to be a property the makers intended.
- Provenance
- From the library of the order, now dispersed. Earlier provenance is a clean silence.
- Condition
- Vellum supple, pigments stable. The ink does not register on film.
- Handling
- Read in the Quiet Room, one reader at a time, under supervision.
